Heated Floors

Electric floor heat integrated with uncoupling, waterproofing and large-format tile assemblies.

Heated tile floors perform best when the heating system, substrate preparation and tile assembly are planned together. WNA regularly integrates electric floor heat into bathrooms and other tiled spaces.

Heat is one layer of the assembly

The heating cable is only part of the finished floor. The substrate still needs to be suitable for tile, transitions need to land at workable elevations and the tile format needs adequate support. In many WNA bathrooms, floor heat is coordinated with an uncoupling membrane and the surrounding waterproofing strategy rather than treated as a separate add-on.

Cable placement is planned around permanent fixtures and the areas where heat is useful. That makes the system easier to understand before tile covers it and avoids using the finished tile layout as the place to solve electrical or spacing decisions.

Movement still matters

Heated floors cycle through temperature changes. The tile assembly needs movement accommodation at the locations where it is required so expansion and contraction are not unnecessarily transferred into the finish surface.

Large-format tile adds another reason to prepare the floor carefully. The flatter and more predictable the substrate, the easier it is to achieve consistent mortar contact and clean edge alignment over the heating system.

Comfort without compromising the tile work

A warm floor can make a bathroom noticeably more comfortable, but the heating system should disappear visually once the room is finished. The controls, cable layout, membrane and tile all need to be planned as parts of the same installation.
